At death, their bodies are brittle and hard.”
~ Lao Tzu, Tao Te Ching, Chapter 76
Enzymes are the unsung heroes of health. They facilitate every chemical interaction in the body. Without them, none of our internal metabolic activities could ever happen.
Although enzymes do many things, today we’ll focus on a particular category of enzymes, called proteolytic (literally, “protein dissolving”) enzymes. One of the important functions of these substances is keeping our organs and tissues from becoming stiff and brittle as we age.
But before we talk about how we can use enzymes this way, it will help to understand where this tendency to become stiffer over time comes from.
As we experience injuries, inflammation and other stresses, the body repairs and protects itself by using a substance called fibrin. Fibrin heals damage and protects tissues from the effects of inflammation and oxidation. Think of it like a fine mesh that covers injured tissues to hold them together.
An example of the repair function of fibrin is the creation of scar tissue. Other examples include what happens in our arteries and other tissues when they are exposed to inflammation and damaging free radicals.
In fact, many diseases such as hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis), ischemic strokes (strokes due to blood clots obstructing arteries in the brain), fibrocystic breast disease, uterine fibroids, and endometriosis have a component of hardened tissues related to fibrin.
Normally, the repair and protective effects of fibrin are a good thing. In fact, once healed from the injury, the healed tissue is actually stronger than it was originally.
But all by itself, this repair job tends to be rigid and hard. It’s as if the body creates a kind of armor plate to protect the area from any further damage. When this interferes with healthy functioning, it’s called fibrosis.
In a young, healthy body, the rigidity of these repairs is moderated by circulating proteolytic enzymes that soften them. This makes them more flexible and resilient.
The problem happens with age as our bodies make less enzymes. By the time we reach age 40 we are producing dramatically fewer enzymes than we did at age 20. It’s not a coincidence that with age we are affected by increasing stiffness in joints, organs and blood vessels. This progression is related to the stiffness caused by fibrosis.
That’s where we can take advantage of proteolytic enzymes.
There are many of these enzymes within the body. We also get them from food sources. Here’s a short list of the more common dietary ones:
Bromelain (from unripe pineapple)
Nattokinase (from natto, a fermented soy product)
Papain (from unripe papaya)
Another outstanding proteolytic enzyme is called serrapeptase.
Serrapeptase comes from silk worms. It is the enzyme that allows the silkworm to dissolve through it’s tough cocoon and emerge as the silkworm moth.
In the human body, serrapeptase has the unusual property of digesting hard, stiff non-living tissue without damaging live tissue. It also acts as a powerful anti-inflammatory.
The most common use for serrapeptase is in treating scar tissue, fibrosis, abnormal blood clotting (for example varicose veins) and arterial plaque. Other uses include breaking up congestion in the lungs such as in chronic bronchitis.
Serrapeptase is generally safe and effective for most people. However some people should not take it. People with bleeding disorders and those who are taking blood thinning drugs should avoid it. Also, if someone is on aspirin therapy or taking large amounts of vitamin E or fish oils, they should be cautious taking serrapeptase and do so only under medical supervision.
Because it is degraded by exposure to stomach acid, the best way to gain the benefits of serrapeptase is to take it in an enteric-coated form. Also, it’s best to take it separately from food.
I recommend working with a knowledgeable natural health practitioner when using serrapeptase.
“Humans are born gentle and supple.

For all of the high-tech gadgetry that characterizes the fiber optics industry, it is perhaps the humble connector that offers the most consternation. For the construction supervisor, it is staff training and the possibility of high installation scrap rates that threatens budgets and deadlines. For network owners and operators, it is the unfortunate status of connectors as the weak link in the passive network that causes exasperation. And, for all parties involved, the selection of a proper connector for field-installation can be a subject of mystery and debate.
There have been countless variations on connector installation techniques and recommended procedures. Most recently, however, discussion has centered on the subject of mechanical connectors and splice-on connectors. The mechanical connector is a product that evolved primarily out of the enterprise space, and offers a simpler and cleaner alternative to the epoxy-and-polish connectors which preceded it. In contrast, the fusion splice-on connector (or “SOC”) evolved in the telecommunications space and offers factory-quality connector performance without the pigtails, splice trays, and space requirements that characterized conventional installation practices. Improvements in both products have steered them into the FTTH market where they now represent competing alternatives.
The appeal of a good field-installable connector for a FTTH carrier is fairly obvious. For one thing, many FTTH applications involve the deployment of fiber distribution hubs with an accompanying large number of connectors. So, if nothing else, a field-installable option is necessary just to effect repairs. Beyond that, however, the implications for the FTTH drop installation are considerable. Field-installable connectors do not require the inventory, terminals, slack storage, up-front engineering, and up-front investment of a preterminated drop solution. Additionally, they do not require customer premise equipment with splice trays and pigtail assemblies like a conventional fusion-spliced drop solution. Those are important attributes as the FTTH industry looks toward smaller customer premise equipment to support the indoor installations which are characteristic of multi-dwelling units. Likewise, those same attributes may help to address the cost concerns associated with drop installations in rural deployments.
Both mechanical and fusion splice-on connectors make use of a pre-polished fiber stub in the connector ferrule. Mechanical connector, as the name implies, use a mechanical method to align a cleaved fiber with the pre-polished stub and then use a cam, wedge, or crimp mechanism to secure the fibers together. In essence, it is a connector end-face and a mechanical splice in one package and within a few millimeters distance of one another. The craft-dependent alignment and presence of two optical discontinuities in such close proximity to one another has always been the weakness of the mechanical connector. To adjust for this intrinsic shortcoming, vendors have used index matching gels to reduce the reflectance and attenuation associated with the mechanical splice behind the pre-polished stub. However, the lifespan of the gel and the robustness of the mechanical splice have often been questionable.
Without a doubt, mechanical connectors have improved. New index matching gels and improved alignment mechanisms have made mechanical connectors viable in areas where they would have previously never been considered. At the same time, however, advances in fusion splice-on connector technology have yielded cost reductions and craft improvements that put the two installation options on competitive footing.
The key value proposition for fusion splice-on connectors relative to mechanical connectors has always been the fusion splice itself. There is no serious debate in the industry about the quality difference between the two approaches. A fusion splice dramatically reduces attenuation, eliminates reflectance, and mitigates craft-induced error by introducing an automated alignment process. Additionally, when the fusion splice is protected by a hermetically-sealed heat shrink, a package is created which is as mechanically robust as it is optically superior. Thus, a splice-on connector yields a factory-quality connection in a field-installable format. However, the quality advantage has been a fact for over a decade. The cost and craft advantages which make the spliceon option competitive with mechanicals have only been realized in the past couple of years.
When splice-on connectors first came on the scene in the late 1990′s, fusion splicers were cumbersome, complicated, and priced in the sports car range. So, in order to enable the application, vendors created proprietary splicers which were engineered solely for the purpose of installing proprietary splice-on connectors. To make this solution cost-effective, these machines replaced view screens with a microscope; replaced automated alignment with a manual process; and replaced loss estimation with a field technician’s educated guess. As a result, the splice-on connector option required an investment in dedicated splicing equipment and usually yielded a high scrap rate due to the limitations of the splicing equipment.
Today’s splice-on connectors are engineered to work with the removable fiber holders that are common on most fusion splicers. Thus, rather than requiring an entirely different machine, the splice-on connector merely requires an additional holder in order to work with the same machine that would be used anywhere else in the network. It follows, therefore, that the technician installing one of these connectors can use anything ranging from the ultra-compact and affordable splicers developed for FTTH to the most sophisticated core-alignment machines. And, unlike a mechanical splice, the splice-on connector installed with today’s technology uses automated alignment and calibrated loss estimation features. So, not only is scrap reduced through the use of automated technology, but site revisits are dramatically reduced since the technician has a very reliable indicator of connector performance before leaving the installation site.
Over the past decade, fusion splicer technology has followed a market trajectory similar to computers in that consumers have benefited from a combination of steadily improving performance and decreasing costs. At the same time, connector performance requirements in both telecommunication networks and enterprise applications have been rising. Since the quality of a mechanical connector is largely dependent on the quality of the cleaver used to prepare the fiber for the mechanical splice, the low-cost cleavers that accompanied most mechanical connector kits are being replaced out of necessity by higher cost and higher quality products. So, while equipment costs for fusion splicers have been going down, kit costs for mechanical connectors have been going up. Granted, the cost is still not equal, but it is getting close enough to warrant stronger consideration of the quality advantages for the splice-on option.
Mechanical connectors are a relatively easy option, and they have made significant strides in quality over the past several years. However, the fact of the matter is that any entity with a significant amount of fiber is probably going to need to own a fusion splicer, and a FTTH carrier certainly falls into that category. So, in FTTH, the skill sets and equipment for fusion splicing are already a necessity and the cost to add splice-on connector capability to a fusion splicer kit are less than or equal to the mechanical alternative. When those facts are combined with the undisputed quality advantages of a fusion-spliced solution, the splice-on connector becomes the obvious FTTH field installable alternative.
For all of the high-tech gadgetry that characterizes the fiber optics industry, it is perhaps the humble connector that offers the most consternation. If there is a service at a funeral home it is most common to send flowers to the funeral home for the viewings and you should try and get the flowers delivered for the first viewing as their may only be 2 viewings.
2. It is acceptable& customary to send funeral flowers, Plants or Fruit & Gourmet Baskets to the funeral home
3. If you are sending flowers to a residence do not send funeral flowers such as a funeral spray or a cross or a funeral basket. Funeral arrangements are typically one side and designed to be placed against a wall not suitable for a residence. Instead it is traditional to send white flowers in a vase to a residence or a plant.
4. If the family is Jewish and the family is sitting Shiva you should send a Shiva basket which is basically a fruit & gourmet basket that should be kosher unless you know it does not matter. You can also send a green plant but you should not send flowers or blooming plants.
5. Funeral flower arrangements are typically one sided as they are placed against the wall rather than in the center of a table. Funeral flowers that go to the funeral home are generally large and showy. Pieces like crosses, hearts and large funeral sprays can cost hundreds of dollars. Even though you found something to send for forty dollars you need to consider that your arrangement will be placed next to all the others and many people will spend more. I would send no less then a fifty dollar arrangement to a funeral home. This would be for plants and floral arrangement.
6. The card message is personal but some ideas are ‘our thoughts and prayers are with you’ or ‘with deepest sympathy’. It is also typical not to address the card specifically to anyone as the funeral director will collect all the cards and give them to the family. When you send a sympathy piece the card should clearly indicate who is sending the flowers (last name and or company name if appropriate) as it can be confusing to the family during a stressful time. You should also put your address on the card to make it easier for the family when they send out thank you cards.
7. If you are placing a banner on the piece it should state your relationship to the deceased. Customary banners are ‘beloved Mother’, ‘Dearest Friend’ etc. Many times a florist does not offer this as it is not something that they charge for and it costs them money. It will make the sympathy flowers you are sending look special so you should consider if it is appropriate for you.
8. When you send flowers to a funeral home the family generally does not take them home. If you want the family to have something for their home it would more likely occur and be more convenient if you sent the flowers to the home directly.
9. If you contact a funeral home that is trying to sell flowers you should politely say no thanks. Many of the mom and pop funeral homes have been purchased by a just a couple very large companies . These companies maintain the local name but they operate very differently. The funeral directors working for the funeral homes get commissions on flowers that are sold, the funeral home also keeps some of your money as commission on your flower order instead of it going into the sympathy flowers. Worse yet the funeral home employees don’t know anything about flowers, what is in season or in stock so you are paying a premium for lousy service.
10. Beware of websites pretending to be funeral homes, or websites acting like funeral home guides that are selling flowers. These sites are not associated with the funeral homes they pretend to be and I would not recommend dealing with them.
1. If so, you might want to learn a little more about them before you decide to make one your pet.
All of our pet puppies are spayed and neutered before they go to their new homes. They are microchipped, wormed and all age appropriate shots given, with regular veterinary care. This is an assurance of the best possible health and care. Loads of love is given to these sweet kids and socialization to encourage and develop the young personalities. Your puppy comes home with an 8lb. bag of Lifes Abundance dog food, puppy blanket, toy, a packet of useful information (health records included). Most important, we offer a lifetime of breeder support, to help you in any way possible!
NEW PUPPY PRICING: The World’s economy is in a temporary decline and Jubilee labradoodles would like to do our part to help labradoodle lovers who have been effected, still have the family dog of their dreams. We will be running temporary special pricing for a short perid of time, so reserve your new puppy today!
There is no doubt that they make for great pets, but many people do not know much about their interesting history.
As the name implies, these dogs originated in Australia. Here, a man by the name of Wally Conran bred a Labrador Retriever to a Standard Poodle in order to help a vision-impaired woman whose husband was allergic to dogs. By combining the two breeds, Conran was able to provide her with a great lead dog that wouldn’t aggravate her husband’s allergies.
Conran first tried to help the woman by finding a poodle who wouldn’t aggravate her husband’s allergies. But, after sending 33 different saliva samples to the woman over a period of two years and, finding that all of the samples aggravated her husband’s allergies, he finally had to look at other options.
That was when he decided to develop the first Australian labradoodle. Today, Australian labradoodle puppies can be identified by a number of characteristics. These include…
Body – compact and slightly longer than they are tall with slightly sloping shoulders
Head – proportional to the rest of the body, with the length from the nose to the eyes being slightly longer than from the eyes to the back of the head
Eyes – large and expressive
Nose – large, fleshy and never pointed
Tail – long and shaped like a saber; not docked
Feet – thick foot pads that are close together
Teeth – slightly overlapping
Of course, the appearance of Australian labradoodles will vary somewhat depending upon the appearance of its parents as well as upon how the genes are divvied up. It is not unusual for Australian labradoodle puppies to look like small versions of Labradors, but it is also not unusual for them to look more like a poodle — or like something in between.
You can find the exact Australian labradoodle puppies to suit your specific taste, while also remaining true to this hybrid breed.
The simple truth is that Australian labradoodles make for great pets and are simply adorable, no matter what variety you get. So, if you are thinking about purchasing one of these pets, make sure to purchase it from a reliable breeder and you will be sure to be thrilled with the results.
Gain A Better Understanding Of Australian Labradoodles Before Bringing Home Your New Pet
Are you considering purchasing Australian labradoodle puppies for your home? Even so, it was the Celtics favored to emerge after the Cavs, so many were surprised to see the success in Orlando during the playoffs.
Much of this success can be attributed to Dwight Howard, a core of the Orlando Magic franchise. Howard is the best rebounder in basketball, the best shot blocker in basketball, and consistently has one of the highest field goal percentages in basketball. Having built upon his success of the past few years, Howard is still entering his physical prime and seems to be improving with each season.
While Howard’s presence is a huge part of the success the drives the Orlando Magic, an off season acquisition is adding more excitement about the Orlando Magic and their prospects for the upcoming season. The Magic acquired Vince Carter in a trade from the Nets during the summer.
Carter has consistently been one of the NBA’s best scorers during the past ten seasons, and will immediately add yet another dose of credibility to this team. While they’ve lost Hedo Turkoglue, the tradeoff seems more than worthy when you consider what Carter can bring to this already dangerous team.
The Orlando Magic shocked the basketball world during the 2009 NBA playoffs, defeating the Boston Celtics in wypadanie włosów 7 games, and then, more surprisingly, cruising past the Cleveland Cavs in five games.

PEEK corrosion resistant coating, you say? What’s PEEK? This comparatively new engineered family of thermoplastics: PEEK (polyether etherketone), PEK (polyether ketone), and PAEK (polyaryl etherketone) are partially crystalline engineering thermoplastics (plastic polymers) that can be used at high temperatures. These resins have excellent chemical resistance. Their high thermal stability comes from rigid ketone and phenyl groups, while their high strength and thermoplastic state below the decomposition temperatures come from the ether groups.
These compounds can have melting temperatures in excess of 650 degrees Fahrenheit, with mechanical properties retained to about 500 degrees Fahrenheit.
Tensile properties are comparable to most engineering thermoplastics. Creep resistance is outstanding and may sustain large stresses over a useful service life without measurable strain.
Wear rates and friction are becoming increasingly important against metals. Corrosion protection, too, is often an integral part. For these reasons, PEEK (and related polymers) are becoming increasingly important, as demands on them for their structural properties grow, particularly at elevated temperature.
Friction from composites of thermoplastic vary in a unique way from metals in that their asperities (surface irregularity) will deform much more under load. Consequently, friction between a thermoplastic and metal surface is typically characterized by adhesion deformation disproportionally lower to load. The primary mechanism is adhesive wear, which is characterized by fine particles of polymer removed from the surface. This is a good illustration that the surfaces are wearing properly. Wear performance seems to be better at low pressures and high speeds, rather than high pressures and intermediate speeds. All display excellent resistance to wear over wide ranges of pressure, velocity, temperature, and counterface roughness.
Properties of some of the PEEK coating or PEEK plastic plastic are now characteristic of PTFE, PFA, and other corrosion resistant compounds. The advantage is in markets demanding greater resistance to abrasion, higher temperature environments, too. Next time consider PEEK corrosion resistant coating.
For these reasons, kosze wiklinowe PEEK (and related polymers) are becoming increasingly important, as demands on them for their structural properties grow, particularly at elevated temperature.
(Large gouges or corrugations in a polymer surface would suggest not adhesion wear, but abrasion wear or the material’s pressure velocity limit was violated.
Wear factors of PEEK plastics, PEK or PAEK appear much less affected by load and speed components, independent of PV.

A strange lady who looks like she hasn’t had a good night’s sleep in two years cometh down from the mountain holding two large tablets constructed from empty Huggies diaper boxes. Written onto them were ten laws to live and abide by if you have a pre-toddler, toddler or young child who is a picky eater:
1. Do not think your child’s picky eating is abnormal. Picky eating for a child is natural; it happens when a child begins to develop a sense of individuality. You do want your child to develop a sense of individuality, don’t you?
2. Do not think that you did something wrong. Like I said, your child is simply developing a sense of individuality. Some researchers say that picky eating is the result of genetics. That debate will last well beyond your child’s childhood years at which point his picky eating will be a moot point. But just ask yourself this: “Isn’t picky eating just a version of yes and no choices being made by your child? And isn’t it natural for children to start making conscious yes and no decisions once they are around the age of 1?”
3. Do not force your picky eater to eat when he doesn’t want to. If you force him, he will associate eating with activities that he dislikes and he’ll learn to hate eating, which only makes his picky eating even worse. If your child initially rejects the food (and he will), leave it in front of him for five to ten minutes. If he hasn’t eaten any after that, take it away and say nothing. Some children dislike having their “property” taken away from them (my kid hates it), and the act of taking the plate away might have a mental effect on such a child so as to make him want the plate of food – works on some children, but not all.
4. Do not show your anger or frustration to your picky eater when he refuses to eat. Doing so will just lead him to learn that mealtime is not fun and he’ll learn to hate eating even more. Just maintain an upbeat (or at least neutral) tone of voice and facial expression in front of your picky eater, even if you are angry or frustrated on the inside.
5. Do keep trying to serve the food that she has rejected in previous meals. Repetition is a pain and I am sure that you have already heard this, but it’s very important to keep trying.
6. Do not ruin your picky eater’s appetite by serving her snacks and heavy liquids like milk near meal time. Get her hungry. This is just common sense.
7. Do not worry so much about feeding your child unhealthy food if that’s all he’s willing to eat at this moment. If your child is a picky eater, then that also means your child is most likely having trouble getting the protein and caloric intake that his body needs. In that case, isn’t something better than nothing, or is nothing better than something? It’s a rationale decision. Just make sure that he at least gets his children’s multi-vitamin and fish oil omega-3 for the day. I prefer giving my daughter a Pediasure, which contains all of those things and provides a good amount of much needed protein. To be clear, vitamins, fish oil and Pediasure are NOT substitutes for real food. (BTW, fish oil omega-3 tastes bad, but it can be purchased in powder form and sneaked into your child’s drink, or just go with the Pediasure which already includes it.)
8. Do not worry so much about the little bit of food that your picky eater ate today. If he’s hungry, he’ll eat more. If he’s not hungry, he’ll eat less. If he ate less today, he’ll make up for it tomorrow by being hungrier tomorrow. It’s that simple. It’s funny how you worry so much about this now, but later on in your child’s life, many of you will be sending him to bed without dinner as a form of discipline.
9. Do try to make eating a fun experience. This way, your picky eater looks forward to mealtime and wants to participate in mealtime.
10. Do try putting your picky eater together with other kids who are about the same age or a bit older during meal times. Kids enjoy following the lead of other kids (in other words, kids like to copy kids). Your picky eater would benefit from watching other kids who don’t have problems eating.
Lastly, and not as one of the 10 Commandments, but more like a footnote, do try a DVD called “Eat, Baby, Eat!” It’s a unique video DVD designed to help pre-toddlers and toddlers with their picky eating.

Passing the Left Bank, a brasserie on Santana Row in San Jose, it’s easy to forget you’re not in Paris. The street scene is a freshly concocted recreation of a French boulevard, or… is it an Italian plaza? A few steps further and you’ve entered Sino, artistic chef Chris Yeo’s hip interpretation of a metropolitan Asian bistro with dim sum carts swirling about richly minimalist ruby, gold and bronze booths. No, you’ve been transported to Beijing’s poshest restaurant… or have you? Meanwhile, at El Jardin in Santana Row park, a Latin jazz trio plays, reminiscent of an evening in Buenos Aires… or not.
There are so many sensory experiences along San Jose’s themed shopping and dining district called Santana Row, that it’s understandable why so many first-time visitors might become confused about where they are. In creating Santana Row, some of the world’s best urban experiences were fused, generating a new place that defies categorization. More than a shopping district, it is a community with parks, townhouses and a hotel. Facades of the five-story buildings along the boulevard hint stylistically that Santana Row evolved over the past century. A pseudo art deco frieze atop one of the false fronts heroically declares “DeForest” hinting that some industrial plant once occupied the building in the 1930s. The consistent height of the buildings along its 1500-foot “Main Street” shocks one’s senses after arriving from sprawling Silicon Valley where building height seems constrained only by purpose. Suddenly, you’ve entered an urban canyon as is common in European cities.
Santana Row’s developer set out to redefine the urban neighborhood, by salvaging its best characteristics and filling its street-level spaces with chic shops and gathering spots that would attract upscale tenants and residents. The strategy worked. Santana Row is home to such famous names in fashion as Gucci, Tommy Bahama, Ann Taylor, Burberry and Brooks Brothers. Discriminating diners are attracted to such one-of-a-kind restaurants as Tanglewood where inventive forms of “comfort food” are served in what General Manager Andy O’Day calls “Spirited American Cuisine.” Entrees include such unusual items as “Coca-Cola Braised Pork Belly” or “Buttermilk Fried Wolfe Quail” served with honey-buttered mini biscuits, American culinary legend James Beard’s favorite biscuit.
Just like Tanglewood’s menu, everything about Santana Row is completely new and yet, also, remembered vaguely. We’ve been here before… somewhere in our imagination. That sense of familiarity amidst the surreal is the result of a wholly California invention… the theme park. Santana Row is an adult evolution of the theme park, where an idealized, proverbial environment is created for our enjoyment. It stands to reason that the state where the theme park was invented (Disneyland, 1955) would also extend its affection for whimsy to shopping. Throughout the golden state, shopping is more than what is inside the store. It’s the experience that goes with it.
If San Diego was the birthplace of California, then Old Town San Diego – the city’s historic pueblo dating from 1769 – is the birthplace of themed shopping. Here in 1968, California established a state historic park to preserve its first downtown. Today, 27 early-1800s homes, a one-room school house, the first church in San Diego and government buildings are preserved. Scattered among the historic buildings once-derelict motels and shops have since been transformed into Mission-revival adobes containing 106 shops and 12 art galleries that bring life to the museum-like quiet of the state park by selling colorful south of the border crafts, clothing and treasures. On visiting Old Town, a government official from Mexico was overheard saying to another of his colleagues, “The Americans are even doing Mexico better than us.” Patio restaurants amidst the themed shops resonate with the happy sounds of Mariachi musicians as they entertain diners and stroll beneath columned arbors draped with magenta bougainvillea.
Beyond the limed walls and red tile roofs of Old Town, the maritime history of San Diego (home to the U.S. Navy, America’s tuna fleet, cruise ships and numerous yacht clubs) is celebrated at Seaport Village. A contrast of silvery-black weathered buildings and colorfully painted salt box structures provide a nautical flair along the waterfront. Lushly landscaped paths wind past curio shops and eateries and along San Diego Bay where benches provide good spots to watch passing sailboats and warships.
Further up the California coast in Orange County’s Newport Beach, coastal life is the theme of Fashion Island, an enclave of Mediterranean style with splashing fountains and a signature koi pond. The first impression one has on entering Gary’s Island – one of three local Gary’s stores in the mall – is the brilliance of the apparel’s tropical colors: turquoise and yellow, pink, and lime. While, at Lola Rouge Kids, designer fashionistas aged 6 to 16 go “gahgah” over its trend-setting party wear. Clearly, you’re not in London any more. Though, if you seek more conservative rags to don, explore Orange County’s only Bloomingdale’s or Neiman Marcus among Fashion Island’s 200 specialty stores.
The granddaddy of California’s destination shopping centers is Costa Mesa’s South Coast Plaza. Although sleek South Coast Plaza does not fit categorization as themed shopping, because it is such a favorite of travelers (24 million shoppers a year) it deserves a spot on any review of what makes California shopping special. South Coast Plaza’s distinction is its unusual concentration of the most glamorous names in design: Tiffany & Co., Valentino, CHANEL, St. John, Hermes, Dior, Hugo Boss, Louis Vuitton and Giorgio Armani to name a few (there just isn’t space here to name them all). More than a shopping center, South Coast Plaza’s 280 stores elevate shopping to the level of performance with their showmanship and the center’s five valet parking stations and five concierge desks that will arrange dinner reservations or theater tickets, if you can bear to stop perusing the stores.
If not, performance shopping is found at two of the biggest names in entertainment, Disney and Universal Pictures. Set between Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventure theme parks, the shops and restaurants at Downtown Disney in Anaheim are all about having fun, whether buying sports merchandise at the ESPN Zone, listening to jazz as you dine at House of Blues, purchasing Disney memories at World of Disney, being amazed at the Lego Imagination Center or creating a new persona at Sephora. Universal City Walk at the entrance to Universal Studios Hollywood in Los Angeles claims 65 cool things to do, from finding native American arts and crafts at Adobe Road, to dressing like a “hog” at the Harley Davidson store, to finding Southern California skateboard fashions at Skechers, to unearthing rare video games at EB Games, or to being amused by the rock and roll memorabilia as you chow down on a burger at the Hard rock Café Hollywood.
There’s a local saying that goes, “nobody walks in L.A.,” though along Santa Monica’s Third Street Promenade, it seems everyone in L.A. County is. This is one of the places to see Hollywood celebrities out and about, particularly midweek when it’s less crowded. Among those who have been seen on the three-block-long Promenade include Brad Pitt, Cher, Meryl Streep, Jane Fonda, Jack Nicholson, Charlise Theron, Jennifer Aniston, Whoopi Goldberg… by now you’ve figured out all area celebrities eventually stop here to watch a film at any of several multi-screen motion picture complexes, to shop at Fred Segal or buy an Austrian ice cream at Charley Tremmel’s.
If star watching is your bag, look for them (again, midweek) at the Beverly Center in L.A. (between Beverly Hills and Hollywood) or in Palm Springs along Palm Canyon Boulevard. The ultimate star-watching location is, however, Beverly Hills’ Rodeo Drive (pronounced Roh-DAY-oh). This posh street of high-end stores was the set for Julia Robert’s character’s shopping spree in the movie Pretty Woman. The shopping area is much more compact than the impression it made on the big screen. Allow an hour to walk its three blocks and a budget of $10,000 if you actually plan to buy something at Bijan (431 N. Rodeo Drive) reputed to be the world’s most expensive store. Though, the window shopping and people watching are free.
If there is an opposite of stuffy and pricey Rodeo Drive it must be historic Olvera Street in downtown Los Angeles. This is where the Pueblo de Los Angeles began and this mercado still exudes the liveliness of a Mexican village. Street vendors sell Mexican jumping beans, restaurants serve authentic traditional recipes and vibrant Mexican art and crafts are displayed under red tile and canvas awnings along its cobbled streets.
The sights and textures of Olvera Street’s glimpse of old Mexico are quite a contrast from the Assyrian architecture of the Citadel Outlets south of downtown L.A. on Interstate 5. This outlet center was once the headquarters of the Samson Tire & Rubber Co. and to reflect a Samson and Delilah theme was fashioned after a 7th-century B.C. Assyrian palace and is adorned with heraldic griffins and bas-reliefs of Babylonian princes in the style of ancient Samaria, Akkadia and Babylonia. Today, the winged guardians at its entrance guard the retail royalty of: Calvin Klien, Tommy Hilfiger and the United Colors of Benetton, among the center’s many outlet stores.
If the Citadel is Sumaria, then Carmel by the Sea must be the place Californian Thomas Kinkade got his inspiration to paint cottages and gardens. This village set beside a picture-perfect bay on the Monterey Peninsula has, since its earliest days, sought to protect its beauty, charm and environment. After the San Francisco earthquake of 1906 displaced artists, poets, musicians and writers (Jack London among them), they gathered here and influenced the town’s bohemian style. Today, this village of Tudor-styled cottages and 200-plus shops is the epitome of “quaint,” a village of homes without street numbers where art galleries are more prevalent than petrol stations.
Columbia State Historic Park near Sonora, in the Gold Country, is another place that rejects the present. There, the 1850s live always. Wells Fargo stage coaches roll along its dusty streets, miners retell their tall tales, shops are filled with goods reminiscent of the California gold rush, and the sounds of laughter, card games and honky-tonk pianos are heard from inside saloons along its wooden sidewalks. A similar atmosphere is found in Old Sacramento, the original jumping off spot for the California gold rush in 1849. A blend of tourist shops and those serving the local populace keep travelers and residents alike returning to Old Sacramento, as happened from 1848 to the early 1870s, when the California Gold Rush eventually slowed.
One themed California shopping area that has never slowed down is San Francisco’s famous Chinatown. Since its earliest days, Chinatown has been a window to the Far East, importing exotic goods and spices to scent San Francisco streets with commerce and character. The Chinese immigrants who founded Chinatown didn’t know they were building a themed shopping area. They recreated what was familiar to them. The resulting pagoda-marked district is as close a resemblance of China as you’ll find outside the Orient. Street signs read in both Chinese and English characters, buildings have the stacked, up-swung roofs of royal palaces, smoked ducks hang in shop windows, small markets sell produce and fresh fish along the street, Chinese is spoken in all the shops, and carts laden with goods crowd sidewalks waiting to be shipped across the country. None of this was done to evoke character; it is real life in a fantasy place.
Just as on Santana Row, it’s easy to forget that you’re in California when exploring the fascinating shops of San Francisco’s Chinatown. As, California’s themed shopping areas have the common ability to entertain as you shop California.
Linking Shop California
Beverly Center – http://www.beverlycenter.com
Carmel by the Sea – http://www.carmelcalifornia.org
Chinatown – http://www.sanfranciscochinatown.com
Citadel Outlets – http://www.citadeloutlets.com
Columbia State Historic Park – http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=552
Downtown Disney – [http://disneyland.disney.go.com/disneyland/en_US/moreMagic/landing?]name=DowntownDisneyLandingPage
Fashion Island – http://www.shopfashionisland.com
Old Sacramento – http://www.oldsacramento.com
Old Town San Diego – http://www.oldtownsandiego.org
Palm Canyon Boulevard – http://www.palm-springs.org
Rodeo Drive – http://www.beverlyhillsbehere.com
Santa Monica – http://www.santamonica.com
Shop California – http://www.shopcalifornia.org
Seaport Village – http://www.spvillage.com
Santana Row – http://www.santanarow.com
South Coast Plaza – http://www.southcoastplaza.com
Universal Citywalk – http://www.citywalkhollywood.com
Passing the Left Bank, a brasserie on Santana Row in San Jose, it’s easy to forget you’re not in Paris.
